Daewoo Shipbuilding vs. Hanjin Heavy Industries Conflict in Defense Industry
Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering and Hanjin Heavy Industries are competing for pride in the defense industry market that makes warships. The two companies claim to be the leaders in the defense industry, using the modifier "best, best and first."
Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering won orders for a total of 15 special vessels related to the defense industry over the four years from 2011 to 2014. By year, the company received orders for three ships in 2011 and eight in 2012, and three and one in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction has won a total of 24 orders over the past four years, including seven in 2012, four in 2013 and four in 2014.
Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction, in particular, has steadily won and built special ships in the defense industry every year despite difficult situations such as the four-year strike at the Yeongdo shipyard from 2010 to 2013.
Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction Co. jumped into the defense industry first in the shipbuilding industry. Once the Magok Engineering Center is completed, the company plans to use specialized experimental facilities to study improved operational performance of vessels, smart ship technology, core equipment technology and maritime unmanned aerial vehicles to contribute to the Navy's buildup of power, the company explained.
대우조선 vs 한진중, 방위산업 시장 격돌
대우조선해양과 한진중공업이 군함을 만드는 방위산업 시장을 두고 자존심 경쟁을 벌이고 있다. 양사는 '최다, 최고, 최초'라는 수식어를 사용하면서 방위산업 분야에서 선두를 자처하고 있다.
대우조선해양은 2011년부터 2014년까지 4년간 총 15척의 방위산업 관련 특수 선박을 수주했다. 연도별로 보면 2011년 3척, 2012년 8척을 수주했고 2013년과 2014년에는 각각 3척과 1척을 수주했다. 한진중공업은 2011년 9척을 수주한 데 이어 2012년 7척, 2013년 4척, 2014년 4척 등 최근 4년간 총 24척을 수주했다.
특히 한진중공업은 2010년부터 2013년까지 4년에 걸쳐 이어진 영도조선소 파업 등 어려운 상황에도 불구하고 매년 방위산업 분야 특수선을 꾸준히 수주해 건조했다.
조선업계에서 방위산업에 먼저 뛰어든 곳은 한진중공업이다. 1974년 국내 방위산업체 1호 기업으로 지정된 이래 대형수송함, 초계함, 상륙함, 수륙양용 공기부양선(Hovercraft), 잠수정, 경비정, 해양탐사선 등 특수선을 건조하는 등 국내 최다 함정 건조실적을 보유하고 있다. 특히 이 회사가 자랑하는 독도함은 헬기 6대, 전차 6대, 상륙돌격장갑차 7대, 상륙군 최대 720명을 수송하며, 유사시 지휘함의 기능도 수행하는 1만4000톤급의 다목적 대형수송함이다. 또 국내 최초로 국적 쇄빙선 '아라온호', 국내 최초로 수주한 DSV(Diving Support Vessel, 잠수지원선) 등을 성공적으로 건조, 인도한 바 있다. 이 회사 관계자는 "영도조선소는 특수선, 군함, 중형상선 등을 건조하는 고기술·고부가가치 전문 조선소로 특화하고 있다"며 "시설 현대화를 통해 원가 경쟁력을 확보해 중형상선과 특수목적선 생산에 집중할 것"이라고 말했다.
대우조선해양의 방위산업 역사는 1983년에 인도한 초계함(PCC) '안양함'부터 시작됐다. 이 회사가 방산 분야에서 가장 두드러진 것은 잠수함이다. 1987년 대한민국 해군으로부터 209급(1200톤급) 잠수함 1번함 '장보고함'을 최초로 수주한 이래 현재까지 209급 9척과 214급(3000톤급) 3척, 신형잠수함 2척을 수주했다. 또 인도네시아 잠수함 3척을 수주하는 등 해외수출 실적도 내고 있다. 방산 분야 강화를 위해 영업, 설계, 생산 등 각 부문 산하에 있던 특수선 관련 조직들을 모아 '특수선 사업본부'를 독자적인 사업부로 독립시켜 운영 중이다. 오는 2017년에는 방산 특수성능연구소가 서울 마곡 엔지니어링 센터에 들어선다.
회사측은 "마곡 엔지니어링 센터가 완공되면 특화된 실험 시설을 활용해 함정 작전운용성능 향상, 스마트 함정 기술, 핵심 기자재 기술, 해양 무인화 기술 등을 연구해 해군 전력 증강에 기여할 계획"이라고 설명했다.
